Circular Economy Quest article

Living systems have been around for billions of years.  In living systems there is no landfill or waste.  Things flow in a circle and help each other.

One species waste is another species food.  Energy is provided by the sun.

Things grow or are eaten and when they die nutrients are returned to the soil where they, along with the energy from the sun, helps things grow again.

In the human world we have a linear approach.  We take, we make and we dispose.

Every time we dispose of something we have used materials and energy to make, we are eating into a finite amount of natural resources.  When we dispose of some of these things we create greenhouse gases or produce toxic waste which makes it more difficult for things to grow.

The circular economy is about encouraging us to copy what the living world does so that we can have our own circular economy rather than a linear one. It is about replacing our throw-away culture of today with one where we return and renew.  This means that everything we use can be reused - sometimes for completely new uses.  If something can't be made into something else, it could even be used to create energy.  All these new ways of doing things can now only help save our natural resources but they require new ideas and they can also create new types of businesses in the future.
